First mentioned in documents in 1254. Burned down around 1415 together with the town hall. Restored in 1475 and transformed into the summer residence of the bishops under Bishop Supersaxo. In 1507, the Bishop of Sion - later Cardinal Matthew Schiner - and the Duke of Savoy signed the peace treaty between Valais and Savoy here. In the 17th century also the scene of witch trials.
